Every year we talk about the spiritual disciplines that are at the very heart of Lent. This year, I would like to challenge all of us to practice three disciplines together. All three are forms of sacrifice and selflessness.
- Each week, I will include a Bible verse or two in the bulletin. I would like for all of us to take those words into our hearts, memorize them if you can, and meditate on them for a few minutes each day of the week.
- I would like to practice the discipline of fasting with you. I am going to skip at least one meal a week. As I do so, I will consider the value of giving up something so that I can give more of myself to God. If your health permits, I encourage you to do the same.
- The prophet Isaiah interprets the discipline of fasting with these words, (Isaiah 58:6-7)
to loose the bonds of injustice,
to undo the thongs of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover them,
and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
